Students do not have to give up ownership or copyrights of any kind in order to participate and be published in a Word Ventures book.

Students automatically own the copyrights to their work simply by having written or created it, and they do not have to give up those rights to either a sponsor or Word Ventures in order to be included in a given book.

A parents or adult student does need to give permission to use the student's work in the book, but this in no way gives the sponsor or Word Ventures any ownership of the work itself.

The final published book that contains all of the students' work will be copyrighted to the book's sponsor—the school, library, or other organization that is sponsoring the book publishing project. This copyright only pertains to the entire compiled book as a whole. Each individual work contributed by each student remains owned by that student.
